...when used for the Turk languages of Central Asia, where there is little consensus (e.g., Karakhanid or Qarakhanid? Kagan, Khaqan or Kaghan? All are used—and the latter is an Avar/Juan-juan word in any case, for which no standard exists). For Turkish the modern standard modified Latin alphabet is used throughout, and to aid the reader these modifications are given below. However, where a more familiar form of a Turkish word occurs in English, I have favoured this (e.g., Pasha instead of Papa).
